One of the highlights of my childhood summers growing up on Cape Cod was a trip to the Melody Tent to see the Kaleidoscope Children’s Theater make all of my favorite fairy tales come to life before my eyes. For a young child, seeing all your favorite classic fairy tale characters come to life literally before your eyes is pure magic.
I was fortunate enough last year to take my own son to the Melody Tent, and see the magic in his eyes as he experienced his first real theater performance.
We were able to make it to three of the four daytime children’s performances by the Kaleidoscope Children’s Theater; Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Pinocchio.
After the first show, each time we drove past the big blue tent on West Main Street, my little three year old begged to go back. He loved what he had experienced, and I felt so proud.
What I LOVE about Kaleidoscope Children’s Theater at the Melody Tent:
The cast is inclusive! In a single show that we saw last year, there was an actor in a wheelchair, a young man with Down Syndrome, plus men, women, and children.
The show started on time and had an appropriate intermission.
The actors are available for photos and autographs after the show. My guy is still talking about how “beautiful the blue fairy was” when he had a chance to meet her after the Pinocchio performance.
It is SO easy to get to! Parking is a breeze, and there is a police detail to help you get in and out.
What you should know:
The weather can be tricky, plus you are in a tent. I saw people with handheld fans and spray bottles during one show, and thought that was a really great idea. We noticed some people opted to move into empty seats further back to get away from the lights where it can get hotter.
The concession stands will be open! We bought lemonade and a soft pretzel at intermission, plus a light up toy (yes at every show, guilty as charged!)
There are plenty of bathrooms.
Expect to have your purse checked at the gate. 12”x12” purse is the posted limited size!
Leave your own food and drink in the car, it is preferred that you purchase refreshments at the concession stand.
